About Windy Hill Consulting & Carrie Huckeby

My father-in-law drank coffee every morning at the local Shoney’s. He and a few friends sat around the table shooting the breeze. Local politics was often the subject. One of his coffee drinking buddies was the general manager of the local cooperative, Ozle Allen. In May 1987, the conversation turned to a job opening in customer service and I interviewed with Mr. Allen. My career in telecommunication began a few weeks later. About Windy Hill Consulting.About Windy Hill Consulting

On my first day, I started dispatching trouble reports to the outside techs. I was soon creating work orders for customer requests.I have always felt I had an advantage in my career starting in customer service. It was a great place to begin to learn telecom basics and the expectations of customer service before the industry exploded with the Internet.

A few years later, I started working with the technicians in the business systems department and eventually moved into business sales full-time. I loved the interaction with the local business customers teaching them to use the benefits of new business systems and voicemail. After building a business sales department, I transitioned into marketing. As the Competitive Service Manager, I managed the local channel, public relations, marketing and sales. When the CLEC manager moved to another position in the company, I assumed the daily operations manager duties for the subsidiary.

In 2011, I accepted the role of Chief Marketing Officer for Telecom Management Services. TMS was formed by two cooperatives to share management resources. The change meant lots of windshield time, but it was an opportunity to work with the bigger picture. The industry was rapidly changing to new financial support formulas and increasing customer demands. It meant having the chance to expand my telcom knowledge by working closer with other discplines and companies.

During my TMS marketing adventures, I consider the most fulfilling and challenging accomplishment to be serving as the CMO during the five-year WK&T fiber-to-the-home project. My responsibility was to develop and launch the initiatives to communicate, educate, migrate, and connect consumers to the new fiber network. This included using a residential door-to-door sales group to get the job done and using the bi-monthly magazine publication to message the construction milestones. The project ended on time with over 13,000 homes and business connected. ARPU increased significantly by adding over 2,000 new consumers and upgrading  existing customers to new fiber packages.

In 2015, in addition to CMO duties, I spent six months serving as the interim Operations Manager at Ardmore Telephone Company. Ardmore is owned and managed by WK&T and is located in Ardmore, AL. The company is on the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama and one of the fastest growing areas in the country. The experience meant more time on the road, but again, it was the opportunity to learn and understand more about what it takes to run a company on a day to day basis.

Outside of day to day responsibilities, I served 12 years with marketing peers on the NTCA Marketing Committee and served as chair of the Tennessee Telecommunications Association’s Marketing Committee. We learned so much together and I came away with great friendships.

On a personal note, David and I have been married 36 years and have two grown children and two grandchildren. We certainly understand why they call them “grand”. Their ages are 4 months and 2.5 years. We call Middle Tennessee home and recently moved to my parent’s home that we renovated over a long 16-month period. The house is located on 53 acres so we have plenty to keep us busy.
